Hair transplant before and after: What to expect

An FUE hair transplant is one of the most effective treatments for hair loss. It’s a quick, painless and minimally invasive technique that provides lasting and natural-looking results.

Here’s everything you need to know about hair transplant before and after opting for this procedure:

  • FUE hair transplants may not be ideal for people facing widespread thinning and baldness, thick scars from scalp injuries or hair loss due to chemotherapy and other medications.
  • A notable percentage of the transplanted hair is expected to fully regrow within three to four months. However, individual results may vary due to several factors, such as your overall health and aftercare practices.
  • Tiny, dot-like scars in the donor area will appear after an FUE transplant, but rest assured, they heal discreetly. They become barely noticeable, even with shorter hairstyles.
  • Your doctor will assess your comprehensive medical history, known allergies and current hair loss patterns to verify whether you’re an ideal candidate for an FUE hair transplant.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking a few weeks prior to the surgery. Your doctor may also recommend avoiding blood thinners and medications that might interfere with the body’s healing ability. Drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet.
  • On the day of the transplant, wash your hair with shampoo and water. Avoid any styling products, such as gel or wax.
  • Local anaesthesia is administered to the donor area, ensuring the procedure is virtually painless.
  • Hair follicles are extracted using special micro punches and implanted in the balding areas.
  • The entire donor area at the back of the head may be trimmed to a length of one to two millimetres.
  • The procedure typically spans an entire day, starting at 7:15 AM. Make sure to plan your day accordingly and arrive with a full stomach.
  • It’s normal to experience a bit of discomfort during a lengthy session. If you sense any pain or unease during the process, just let us know. Our dedicated medical staff is on hand to ensure you have a safe and smooth experience.
  • To reduce the risk of bleeding and swelling, avoid intense physical activities for the first seven to ten days post-surgery.
  • The extraction zone may be bandaged until the following day to keep the small incisions clean from any harmful bacteria and dirt.
  • Newly transplanted hairs may start to emerge between the fourth and sixth months. Most patients reach full natural hair growth by around seven months after the procedure.
  • Remember, every patient’s results and recovery times are different. Just because your hair regrowth is taking longer than expected doesn’t mean the procedure has been ineffective. Hair takes time to grow and following the proper hair transplant before and after care practices is vital for superior results.

FAQs

Hair loss can stem from various factors, ranging from genetics to hormonal changes and physical injuries.

Yes! Since the transplanted hair follicles come from genetically resilient areas that resist balding, expect them to keep growing for the rest of your life.

Some patients may experience temporary redness, swelling and sensitivity in the donor and recipient areas, although these usually subside within a short time. Follow hair transplant before and after care instructions to minimise these effects and ensure a smooth recovery.
